Heracles, who is said to be the greatest hero in the history of legend, will finally appear in the Greek mythology "Constellation". Heracles was born between Zeus, the king of the gods, and Alcmene, the daughter of Electryon, the king of the Mycenaean dynasty. By nature, he had extraordinary abilities and toughness to the gods and people around him, and he was jealous of Zeus's wife, Hera. You will have a hard life. I will talk about this Heracles in the main part of Greek mythology, but here I would like to introduce his episode about Cancer.

ギリシャ神話の「星座編」、いよいよ伝説史上最高の英雄だといわれているヘラクレスが登場します。ヘラクレスは、神々の王であるゼウスと、ミケーネ王朝の王エレクトリュオンの娘アルクメネとの間にできた子です。生まれながらにして、周囲の神々や人々に、人に非ず、といわせるほどに非凡な能力と強靭さを兼ね備えていた彼は、ゼウスの本妻のヘラの妬みをかい、それが原因で苦難の人生を歩むことになります。このヘラクレスについては、ギリシャ神話の本編でお話しすることになるでしょうが、ここでは、まず、蟹座にまつわる彼のエピソードを紹介していこうと思います。

Cancer is the constellation of people born from June 21st to July 20th. By the way, crab is crab in English. But why did Cancer come to be called Cancer? It also means "cancer". Why did Cancer come to be called by such a name? According to historical facts, the ancient Greek medical scientist Hippocrates saw the mass of cancer cells he had taken out and said, "It looks like a crab." He was already researching and treating breast cancer at that time. It's amazing. This time, the Crab Cancer will talk about the main character, Cancer.

蟹座は6月21日～7月20日生まれの人の星座だそうですね。ところで、蟹は、英語ではcrabです。それなのに、どうして蟹座はCancerと呼ばれるようになったのでしょう。それも、cancerって、「癌」という意味。どうして蟹座がそんな名前で呼ばれるようになったのでしょう。それは、史実によると、古代ギリシャの医学者ヒポクラテスが、取り出した癌細胞の塊を見て「蟹のようだ」といったことに由来するとか……。彼は、あの時代にすでに、乳癌の研究と治療を行っていたそうです。すごいですね。今回は、その蟹Cancerが主人公の蟹座についてお話をしていこうと思います。

蟹の災難

Heracles, who was born with rare abilities and physical strength, was a child of Zeus's mistress, and was a lonely and hated existence for his wife, Hera. There, Hera casts various curses on Hercules and afflicts him. The curse of the spatula causes Hercules to kill his beloved wife and child. Awakened from the curse, Hercules is shocked and overwhelmed by despair when he learns what he has done. And he tried to commit suicide, but he was held back by the people around him and taken to the temple to pray for his oracle. His father, Zeus, feels sorry for his son Heracles and declares twelve hardships as his oracle. Here are 12 of the famous Heracles achievements.

生まれながらにして希代の能力と体力を備えていたヘラクレスは、ゼウスの愛人の子ということで、本妻のヘラにしてみれば疎ましくて憎い存在でした。そこでヘラはいろいろな呪いをヘラクレスにかけて彼を苦しめます。そのヘラの呪いによって、ヘラクレスは、最愛の妻と子を殺してしまうことになります。その呪いから覚めたヘラクレスは、自分のしでかしたことを知って、衝撃を受け、絶望に打ちひしがれます。そして自殺を試みようとしましたが、周囲の人々に押しとどめられ、神託をあおぐために神殿に連れていかれました。父ゼウスは、わが子ヘラクレスを哀れに思い、その神託として12の難行を言い渡すのです。これが有名なヘラクレスの12の功業です。

With tremendous power, I challenged Hydra. It was Hydra who was tired. When I was fluttering and almost collapsed ...

蟹が関わるのは、ヘレクレスがそのうちの2番目の難行に挑んでいた時でした。ヘラクレスは、9つの頭を持つヒュドラという蛇の化け物を退治しにレルネという沼に行きます。そのヘラクレスに、ヒュドラは待っていましたとばかりに襲いかかります。ヘラクレスはひるむことなく、9つの頭を次々に切り落としていきますが、なんとヒュドラは、切り落とされても切り落とされても、その頭を再生して襲ってくるではありませんか。それでもヘラクレスはへこたれません。驚異的な力をもって、ヒュドラに挑みかかっていきました。疲れたのはヒュドラです。ふらふらになって、今にも倒れそうになったそのとき……。

A giant crab monster emerged from the bottom of the swamp. In fact, this monster crab was a friend who has lived with Hydra for many years in the swamp. Then, he came out of the swamp saying, "I can't forgive the guy who afflicts my friend Hydra," and pinches Heracles' ankle with his big scissors.

But Hercules doesn't frighten. When I said, "Ah, I'm still sick!" And shook the crab off my leg very easily, I crushed it. The pathetic crab is only in play, but in the meantime, Hydra, who has regained power, attacks Hercules again.

沼の底から1匹の巨大な蟹の化け物が現れたのです。実は、この化け蟹、沼の中で長年ヒュドラといっしょに暮らしている友だちだったのです。そして、「友だちのヒュドラを苦しめるヤツは許せん」といって沼から出てきて、ヘラクレスの足首を、自分の大きなハサミでバッシーンとはさんでしまいます。

しかしヘラクレスはびくともしません。「エーイ、じゃまだ、どけどけ！」といって、いとも簡単にその蟹を足から振り落とすと、グシャリと踏み潰してしまったのです。哀れな蟹の出番はたったそれだけですが、その間に、力を盛り返したヒュドラは、再びヘラクレスに襲いかかってきます。

Hercules, tired of the head that grows even if it is cut, comes up with the idea of burning the cut at this time. The Heracles strategy was a great success. The head did not grow again from the burned cut. Only one head couldn't be cut off, but Hercules lightly lifted a large mountain-like stone beside him, blocking the swamp and trapping the Hydra.

Seeing this from heaven, Hera pitied the crab that was challenging Hercules to save his friend without regard for his danger, and praised his courage and friendship. I changed my appearance to a star. This became Cancer.

切っても切っても生えてくる頭にうんざりしてきたヘラクレスはこの時、切り口を燃やしてみたらどうだろう、と思いつきます。そのヘラクレスの作戦は見事成功。焼かれた切り口から再び頭が生えてくることはありませんでした。ただ1つの頭だけはどうしても切り落とすことはできませんでしたが、ヘラクレスは、そばにあった山のような大きな石を軽々と持ち上げると、それで沼をふさいでヒュドラを閉じこめてしまいます。

この様子を天界から見ていたヘラは、自分の危険を顧みずに友を救おうとヘラクレスに挑みかかっていった蟹を不憫に思い、またその勇気と友情を讃えて、姿を星に変えてあげました。これが蟹座となったのです。
