今回の獅子座にまつわる話にもヘラクレスが登場します。ヘラクレスの母は、ミケーネ王朝の王エレクトリュオンの娘アルクメネであることは前回の「Cancer 蟹座」でも少し触れましたが、このアルクメネは、美の女神アフロディーテに負けず劣らずの美女で、しかもとても賢かったといわれています。そのアルクメネをゼウスは、またまた、だまして近づいて、そしてヘラクレスが誕生することになるのですが、ゼウスの本妻であり、女神たちの女王といわれているヘラが黙っているわけはありません。本来ならばアルゴーの王になっていたはずのヘラクレスは、ヘラのかけた魔法でその一生を狂わされることになるのです。ああ、あわれなるかな、ヘラクレス……。

獅子座は7月21日～8月20日生まれの星座ですが、この獅子座そのものは、春の夜、東の空に輝く星座です。北斗七星のちょっと南寄りに、明るい6つの星が、力強く両方の前足で地面をかき後ろ足で大地を蹴って空高く駆け上ろうとしている獅子の姿を描きます。この中で最も明るく輝いている星が1等星レグルスで、獅子の心臓のところにあります。次に明るいのが2等星のデネボラで獅子の尻尾の位置にあります。もう１つの2等星は、獅子の首の辺りにある二重星のアルギエバです。この獅子座は、太古からライオンの形をしていることで知られていた星座のようで、バビロニア時代には、ギルガメッシュの叙事詩に登場している森の守り神のフンババの姿だともいわれていたようです。

ヘラクレスが父ゼウスから言い渡された12の難行の1番目は、ネメアの森に住むライオンを退治することでした。このライオンは、恐ろしい人食いライオンで、ネメアの森の近くに住んでいる人々だけでなく、その森に入っていく者があろうものならばことごとく襲って食べてしまうということで、ネメアの国王は困り果てていたのです。そこで、ゼウスは、ヘラクレスにその人食いライオンの退治を命じたというわけです。驚異的な力を持つヘラクレス、そんなライオンの話を聞いてもひるむことなく、カシの木を1本引っこ抜いてこん棒にすると、それをかついでどんどんとネメアの森の中へ入っていきました。

ヘラクレスがライオンの住み家の洞穴の近くにやってくると、人の気配を察したのか、中からライオンがのっそりと姿を現しました。見ると、たった今、人を食いあさっていたのでしょう。口のまわりは血で真っ赤に染まっています。ヘラクレスは、手はじめに矢を放ってみましたが、その矢はライオンの頭に当たって弾き飛ばされるだけ。ライオンは、チクリとも感じていないようで、うさんくさそうにヘラクレスを見やるだけです。ならばと、ヘラクレスは、さっき引っこ抜いてつくったこん棒をライオンの脳天目ざして力いっぱい振り下ろしました。しかし何ということか、こん棒がポキリと真っ二つに折れただけで、ライオンはびくともしません。それどころか、今度ばかりは頭に来たようで、うなり声を上げながら、ヘラクレスに襲いかかってきたではありませんか。

地面に倒されたヘラクレス、武器を失ってしまったので素手で戦うしかありません。そこで、自分の上に馬乗りになっているライオンの首根っこをつかまえると、両腕を回してぐいぐいと力いっぱいしめつけました。さすがのライオンも、首を絞められてはたまりません。とうとうそのまま息絶えてしまいます。ヘラクレスは、そのライオンの毛皮を剥ぎ取ると、勝利の印としてそれを被ってネメアの町へ戻っていきました。国王をはじめとして町中の人々に歓迎されたのはいわずもがな。これによって、ヘラクレスは英雄として讃えられることになるのです。

This allows Heracles to be praised as a hero.

しかし、ここで、ヘラクレスの手柄を快く思わなかったのが、ゼウスの本妻のヘラです。憎きヘラクレスをよくぞ困らせてくれた、と、ネメアの人食いラインの労をねぎらって、その姿を星座に変えてあげました。それが獅子座の由来というわけです。
