🍁 It was said that his younger brother, Prince Oumi, who had no relationship with Emperor Tenchi, was also accompanied there. And the Prince of the Sea was the lover of Princess Nukata. And this song is a song that King Nukata wrote to the Prince of the Sea, who still misses him, and soon after that, the Prince of the Sea also wrote a return song to the Prince of the Sea. It sounds very complicated, but people in the past may have enjoyed more free-spirited romance than we do now ...

💡 "Akanesasu" is a makurakotoba of "purple". It means that it emits a reddish color. A "mark field" is a field with a border. "Sleeve swing" is used to express affection and sadness. What is interesting here is that "field guard" does not mean just "watchman of the field", but refers to "Emperor Tenji". In other words, how bold it is to say that her husband will reveal that she is interacting with her old lover, even though she is no longer with her.

今回は、天智天皇が蒲生野に狩りに出かけたときに、同伴した妃の額田王が詠んだ歌を取り上げます。一面に紫草が生い茂るその色彩が目に浮かぶ雅な一首です。

🌸 あかね色のさす紫草の生い茂る野、標を張った野をあんなに行ったり来たりして、まあ、野の番人に見えてしまうではないですか。あなたがそんなに袖を振ったりするのを……。

🍁 そこには、天智天皇とは不仲の弟、大海人皇子も同行していたとのこと。そしてその大海人皇子は額田王の別れた恋人でした。そしてこの歌は、額田王が今も恋しく思っている大海人皇子に向けて詠んだ歌で、この後にすぐに、大海人皇子も額田王に向けて返歌を詠んでいます。何だかとても複雑な思いがしますが、昔の人は、今のわたしたち以上に自由奔放な恋愛を楽しんでいたのかもしれませんね……。

💡 「あかねさす」は「紫」の枕詞です。あかね色を発する、という意味。「標野」とは境界線を張った野のこと。「袖振る」は、愛情や悲しみを表現するのに使います。ここで面白いのは、「野守」が、単なる「野の見張り番」という意味で言っているのではなく、「天智天皇」のことを指して言っているということです。つまり、終わった仲だとはいえ、昔の恋人とこうしてやりとりしていることが夫にばれてしまうじゃないの、と、詠っている一首、何と大胆なことでしょう。
