日立駅舎を設計したのは建築家・妹島和世さん。
茨城県日立市出身。

日立駅は海岸近くの断崖絶壁の上に建っています。

日立駅からの眺めには、なにか異世界に通じてしまうような感覚がつきまといます。

でも大丈夫。しっかりと結界が張られていますので。
ガラスの結界。
透明な世界で、向こう側が見えますが、向こうには行けません。
通り抜けられないのです。
もちろん、ぐるっと迂回していけば、向こう側に行くことはできるのですが、いちばんよく見える場所は完璧に遮断されています。
建物の耐震性、強化されているガラス。
そう簡単には壊れないよ、ということが安心感につながっているのと同時に、完璧な遮断の証明です。
おりしも、この駅舎が建築されたのは2010年度。
311が直撃したのは、新駅舎としてオープンする直前。2011年。
311で運休になった常磐線は、いつ再開されるとも知れずに、ずいぶん長い間とても静かでした。
いまここから振り返れば、ほんの数週間。新駅舎は、2011年度が始まった4月初めにオープンしました。
いまでも常磐線が動かなかった静寂の日々を思い出すとき、『ああ、ああ、ああ』という、言葉にならない安心感と緊張感で一杯になります。

The fact that it doesn't break so easily gives us a sense of security, and at the same time, it's a proof of perfect blocking. This station building was built in 2010. 311 hit directly just before it opened as a new station building. 2011. The Joban Line, which was suspended at 311 was very quiet for a long time, not knowing when it would be restarted. Looking back from here, it's only a few weeks. The new station building opened in early April, when 2011 began. Even now, when I remember the quiet days when the Joban Line didn't move, I was filled with the indescribable sense of security and tension, "Oh, oh, oh."
