1656年　明暦2年　完成

土浦城は、霞ヶ浦と豊かな水で繋がり、水濠に囲まれている城でした。
本丸が中心地となって、ぐるりと輪郭式に濠がめぐらされて、城下町そのものも濠で囲まれていました。
幾重にも、濠が整備されていましたが、もともと湖畔と湿地の環境を有効活用していたと言えますね。
現在は湖と城の間に市街地が広がっています。
土浦城の城郭は公園として整備され、桜の名所として、紅葉スポットとして、普段から散歩コースとして地元で愛されている公園です。

現在の姿になるまえ、霞ヶ浦は「内海」でした。
その名も「香取海」
しかも、地形的に「海と繋がっていた」というレベルではなく、まさしく「陸地の奥へと広がっている内海」でした。

それを証明する資料は現在のところ公開されていないようです。室町、戦国時代からの築城の歴史がスタートラインです。
しかし、香取海の水上交通と、防御と出撃の両拠点としても、魅力的な土地。
国家を運営するとしたら、軍事的要塞としても、貿易などの交流拠点としても、重要視されたのではないかと予想できます。
出版されていない資料や、ある種の「一子相伝」などによる伝承が「極秘の書簡」などとともに公開される日が来たら、いまよりも詳しく土浦城の歴史が姿を現すのではないでしょうか。いえ、土浦だけでなく、霞ヶ浦と香取海の水域の歴史が。それまでは想像力を働かせながら、想いを馳せるのみです。
ドラマや映画の影響力は大きいですから、タイミングが合えば、香取海を舞台にした「もののふ」たちの戦国模様が映像化されるかもしれません。

海を挟んだ攻防、さらには海に浮かぶ「浮島」の壮大な歴史絵巻など、まだまだエピソードが盛りだくさんです。

土浦城の櫓門は入母屋本瓦葺き！くぐれば重圧感が！！

櫓門は、「桁行3間　梁間2間」の構造で、入母屋造です。
平瓦と丸瓦を組み合わせた本瓦葺きなので、一般的な住宅の屋根瓦とは比べものにならないほど重いです。
The yaguramon has a structure of "3 girders and 2 girders" and is a gabled building. Since it is a real roof tile that combines flat roof tiles and round roof tiles, it is heavier than the roof tiles of ordinary houses.

櫓門をくぐるとき「あれ？」と重圧感を肌で感じられますよ！のしかかってくるような、頭上からの圧迫感です。

ちょっとメモ：「桁行3間　梁間2間」の桁行と梁間とは？

桁行＝「けたゆき」⇒「平側」
梁間＝「はりま」＝「張間」と書くことも⇒「妻側」

建物を図面で見て、長方形の長いほうが「長手方向」で、短いほうが「短手方向」です。
桁行は「長いほう」で、梁間は「短いほう」です。
長いほうは「長手」、短いほうは「短手」と表記されます。

桁行も梁間も、建物がどのような構造であっても使われている用語です。
木造建築、軽量鉄骨、鉄筋コンクリート、RC、いずれにも共通しています。

「櫓門が傾いた」と言われたことがあり、その原因がハトのフン。
ハトのフンの蓄積は相当な量だったらしいですが、もともと本瓦葺きの重量がベースにあるため、建物を歪ませたり地面に沈んだりして傾いてしまったのかも。
もちろん現在は、櫓門の屋根が美しく整えられでいます。
でもハトは、どうでしょう。
土浦駅前に夕暮れ時、たくさん旋回しながら集まってくる姿を見かけますが、あれはハトではなくムクドリでしたか。
都市の発展も大切ですが、これからは人だけでなく野性の動植物たちとの共存も重要になりますね。
動植物たちとの共存。きれいごとではなく、フン害清掃や、雑草駆除などは、税金が使われますので。共存共栄できることを願ってます。

水の都、土浦。水運交通の発展と、しょうゆ醸造で栄えました。明治維新を迎えてからは、空の都にもなっていきますが、それはまた別の機会に。
